Career Week 2016

Memorial community invited to focus on career development

Campus and Community

By Laura Barron

Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in Memorial’s annual Career Week, from Feb. 29-March 4 on the St. John’s campus.

Events range from a meet and greet with industry professionals and career development sessions to workshops and summer job fair and more. Events are taking place in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic.

During Career Week events, students will find help with job search preparation, resumé and cover letter clinics and several networking events.

Blundon Centre panel

This year’s Career Week also includes a panel session for students with disabilities, hosted by the Glenn Roy Blundon Centre, where students can connect with prospective employers. Employers include the Government of Canada, Memorial University and the Ready Willing & Able Program—a national partnership between the Canadian Association of Community Living and the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders Alliance and their local member organizations.

“This session will provide an excellent opportunity for students to network with human resources, career development and employment equity professionals in a relaxed setting to ‘jumpstart’ their employment search,” said Ruth North, manager, Glenn Roy Blundon Centre. “After attending one of these sessions, some students have gone on to secure both summer employment and full-time careers in their chosen field.”

Employee development

For faculty and staff, there are sessions offered through the Department of Human Resources regarding coaching for employee development as well as creating work-life balance. An interdisciplinary session focused on sharing best practices in experiential education is also offered.

“We’ve planned an exciting week of career exploration opportunities,” said Paula Strickland, manager, Career Development. “Whether you’re looking for networking opportunities, a summer job or professional development, there’s something for everyone. We invite students to enhance their skills, make valuable connections and showcase their talent to a wide range of employers.

“We realize it’s also important to encourage faculty and staff to reflect on their careers and invest in their own professional development. We look forward to seeing students, faculty and staff at Career Week.”
