MUN Safe, a new app now available, is the best way to stay informed of breaking campus emergency news.

The app allows users to receive instant notifications, alerts and instructions from Campus Enforcement and Patrol when on-campus emergencies occur. The app also includes a variety of tools and resources for students, faculty and staff.

Stay connected

“Memorial is a safe environment, but it’s always important to be prepared for emergencies,” said Kris Parsons, chief risk officer for Memorial University. “The MUN Safe app makes it really easy to stay connected with what’s happening on campus.”

The app is available for download for Apple and Android devices. Users should opt for push notifications, ensuring that they will receive alerts directly on their phone in the event of an emergency.

Access to resources

The MUN Safe app gives users access to a wide variety of resources.

Users can quickly contact Campus Enforcement and Patrol, access emergency plans or report a safety or security issue.

The Friend Walk option allows users to choose a contact in their phone to virtually walk them from one location to another. Users send a friend or family member a walk request; that person can then track their movements in real time. If anything goes wrong during the walk, their contact will have their exact location and the user has the ability to immediately make a call to emergency responders.

The Support Resources section gives users access to on-campus support services, including the Counselling Centre.

The Report feature allows users to report safety hazards, behavioural concerns and more.

See something, say something

According to Mr. Parsons, one of the other key benefits of the system is the ability for users to quickly and easily report non-emergency safety or security concerns.

“Everyone has a role to play in keeping Memorial safe.” — Kris Parsons

“Everyone has a role to play in keeping Memorial safe,” he said. “If you see something unsafe, like an icy patch of pavement that needs to be salted or unsafe work conditions, it’s really easy to make a report that we can then act on to make campus safer for everyone.

“The app also provides direct access to our emergency plans, so if you’re not sure what your role is in an emergency situation, you can find it there and be prepared.”

A resource for all

While the initial roll out of the app features information specific to the St. John’s campus, the Office of the Chief Risk Officer is working on versions specific to Grenfell Campus and the Marine Institute. The same app can be used by users at all campuses, but when new campus-specific iterations are released, users will be able to update their preferences to choose which alerts and information they would like to receive.

The team is also working on new features that will be rolled out in the coming months to further improve campus safety and security.
