Calling all Memorial runners!
The School of Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR) is challenging you to gather a team and lace up for this year’s Capital Subaru Huffin’ Puffin Marathon Team Relay.
“We’re excited about this new Memorial challenge as part of the team relay,” said Dr. Fabian Basset, associate professor in HKR and chairperson of the Huffin’ Puffin Marathon committee. “We encourage your faculty, school or department to participate on Sept. 25. We’ll have certificates of participation for all participants from Memorial and recognition will be given to top Memorial teams who finish in the male, female and mixed divisions.”
“We’re excited about this new Memorial challenge as part of the team relay.”
Each runner registers individually indicating the name of their team and the leg they’ll be running. There are four legs, with starting points at the start line and at 11k, 21.1k and 32.1k points. Mixed teams should have at least two females. Memorial teams consisting of students, faculty, staff, retirees and/or alumni can register with MUN as part of the team name to indicate your participation (i.e., ‘MUN Nursing’). If a faculty, school or department has multiple teams participating, please indicate a team number as well.
Runners are responsible for their registration fee. Prior to Sept. 1, the fee is $60 per person. The fee increases to $75 after Sept. 1 and the registration deadline is Sept. 22. The fee includes a race shirt (if registered by Sept. 1), finisher medal, a post-race barbecue and the opportunity for Memorial recognition. Runners can register online.
The course is a 21.1-kilometre loop starting in Bowring Park, around Quidi Vidi Lake and back to Bowring Park. All events start at 7 a.m. by the bungalow in Bowring Park on race day.
For the marathon team relay, the first team member runs the first leg passing a relay armband (provided on race day) to the second team member who waits at The Boulevard at Quidi Vidi Lake. The second team member passes the armband to the third runner at the bungalow, and the third runner passes the armband to the final runner at the 32.1 kilometre point on The Boulevard at Quidi Vidi Lake.
“Good luck to all runners on race day,” said Dr. Basset. “I look forward to seeing Memorial teams participation, good sportsmanship and healthy competition.”
