Brexit: A Never-ending Story?

Tuesday, Nov. 5, 12-1 p.m.

SN-4022

The talk will examine the origins of Brexit and the inability of British politicians to deal with it. Demands for a referendum did not reflect a popular groundswell, but rather the inability of The Conservative Party to reconcile internal differences about EU membership. This produced outcomes that the party system has been unable to digest: Internally divided parties have been unable to channel opinion, respond to a larger public interest, or reconcile tensions between parliamentary and plebiscitary democracy. This has not only opened up divisions that will shape British politics for decades but also put the United Kingdom at risk.
