Public Lecture: Managing the Seas for People and Nature

Dr. Rachid Sumaila is professor and director of the Fisheries Economics and Management, UBC Fisheries Centre. He specialized in bioeconomics, marine ecosystem valuation and the analysis of global issues such as fisheries subsidies, illegal fishing, climate change and oil spills. Dr. Sumaila is a world-renowned scientist who is widely published and has received a number of awards in recognition of his work, including the 2017 Volvo Environmental Prize. In his talk, he will address a crucial question still facing humanity:  how to successfully manage the seas to ensure long-term sustainability while meeting the needs of people?  He will answer this question by focusing on three key issues, i.e. how we tackle global warming and climate change; how we implement public policies such as the provision of government subsidies to the fisheries sector; and how we manage the seas.
