A work of great emotional and spiritual depth, the Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen is widely considered to be among the most profound works of the 20th century. Written for piano, clarinet, violin, and cello, it was composed and premiered in a prisoner of war camp during World War II, and features birdsong, unusual rhythmic motives, and moments of serene reflection.
