Irish student scholarship offered through Faculty of Arts

Student Life

By Janet Harron

Imagine waking up in Ireland, with a Bean an Tí or house mother to make you breakfast and greet you with a giant pot of tea.

Imagine eating your breakfast with the lilt of the Irish language in the background. Imagine walking or strolling by the stone walls and green fields as you go to class to learn how to speak the Irish language (Irish Gaelic) in Ireland, this July.

If this is something that interests you, applications are open for Memorial students to apply for the opportunity to travel to Ireland and live in the Connemara Gaeltacht for four weeks while undertaking an immersion course in Irish Gaelic.

Each year the Faculty of Arts selects up to two Canadian students who are eligible to travel to Ireland to attend a summer school. Details of the school are available online at www.icuf.ie. These scholarships are co-awarded. Memorial awards the scholars $1,000 each to cover return travel to the study location, and the Ireland-Canada University Foundation covers the cost of tuition, board and shared lodging for the duration of the course. The awarding of the scholarships will be based on a recommendation from the dean, Faculty of Arts.

Candidates with a record of strong academic achievement should prepare and provide a curriculum vitae that outlines the following information:

• Name and contact information

• Overview of education and training (include grades obtained in courses dealing with Irish content matter)

• Scholastic achievements (may include scholarships, awards, bursaries)

• Non-scholastic achievements (may include athletic awards, leadership, volunteer awards)

• Work and volunteer experience

• Travel experience

• Other areas as deemed appropriate by the applicant

Additionally, please provide a statement (no more than 500 words) outlining why you would like to study the Irish language in Ireland. All Memorial University students are eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to students pursuing a program of study in the Faculty of Arts who have familiarity with the Irish language.

Applications can be emailed to Sinéad Ní Mheallaigh, Memorial University Irish scholar, at snmheallaigh@mun.ca or submitted in person to the Office of the Dean of Arts, room A-5015. Please address the package to Irish Language International Summer School.

Application deadline: Friday, March 18 at 5 p.m.
