MUNalum 101: Oral History

Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1-2 p.m.

Online

Oral history refers to the collection and study of historical information using sound recordings of interviews with people having personal knowledge of past events. It can help round out the story of the past by taking it beyond data and records and filling in gaps in the written record. It can also be critical in capturing the stories of the marginalized, often serving as the only source of information available about a certain place, event or person.

Join Memorial alumna Terra Barrett (BA’14, MA’16), an intangible cultural heritage researcher with Heritage Newfoundland and Labrador, and discover the significant role oral history has played and continues to play in documenting life here. Terra will also share some best practices for capturing stories from your friends and family.

Perhaps this is the time to start your own family history project or document how your own family coped during the pandemic or after the birth of a new baby!
