What is High Performance Computing (HPC) and what can it do for me? How can ACENET help? Used by researchers across many disciplines to tackle analyses too large or complex for a desktop, or to achieve improved efficiency over a desktop, this session takes participants through the preliminary stages of learning about high performance computing (HPC) and computing clusters, and how to get started with this type of computing. It then reviews software packages available for applications, data analysis, software development and compiling code. Finally, participants will be introduced to the concept of parallel computing to achieve much faster results in analysis. This session is designed for those with no prior experience in HPC, and are looking for an introduction and overview.

This session will be delivered online.

This event is designed to educate the campus community on essential emergency preparedness and security initiatives and the vital roles different organizations play when an emergency strikes. We are thrilled to welcome a wide variety of municipal, provincial, federal, and non-governmental partners who will be on-site to share expert advice and provide a behind-the-scenes look at emergency response.

In addition to the indoor displays, our Touch-a-Truck lot will offer an up-close, interactive experience with emergency response vehicles from several police, fire, and service agencies, including police tactical vehicles. 

Highlights of the Expo include:

• Elite K-9 Hero Demos: Witness search and obedience skills from the RNC and RCMP K-9 Teams.
• RNC Mounted Unit: Stop by to meet the horses and learn about their role in public safety.
• Bunker Gear Challenge: Experience the weight of the job by suiting up in real firefighting bunker gear.
• High-Flying Demos: Watch Newfoundland Power showcase their utility bucket truck in action.
• Fresh & Free ‘Cop’corn: Visit the Campus Enforcement and Patrol booth for a snack and a chat.
• Life-Saving Skills: Participate in hands-on CPR demonstrations with St. John Ambulance and Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services.
• Therapy Dog Program: Take a break for some pets and tail wags with the St. John Ambulance therapy dogs.
• Community Support: The Salvation Army will be serving up hot dogs from their Emergency Disaster Response Truck.

Three finalists will be selected from all recipes submitted and given the opportunity to prepare their recipe for a panel of judges at our Disaster Chef Competition on May 13, 2026.

The Moose Hide Campaign began as an Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards women and children. It has grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians from local communities, First Nations, governments, universities, and many other organizations – all committed to taking action to end this violence. A cornerstone of the Moose Hide Campaign is the moose hide pin. Wearing the pin signifies your commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in your life and speak out against gender-based and domestic violence.  On Thursday, May 14, 11am – 2pm please visit the Indigenous Student Resource Centre table to learn more about the campaign, get your own moose hide pin, and access materials from the Sexual Harassment Office.

Shell scripting helps you save time, automate file management tasks, and better use the power of Linux. This session teaches you how to name, locate and set permissions for executable files, taking input and producing output. You will learn about job scripts, shell variables and looping commands.This session will be delivered online.

The national systems use a job scheduler called “Slurm”. In this session you will learn how Slurm works and how it allocates jobs, helping you to: minimize wait time by framing reasonable requests; ask for only the resources you need, to improve efficiency; increase throughput; run more jobs simultaneously; and troubleshoot and address crashes.

This workshop is designed for either new HPC users familiar with Linux and Shell Scripting, but who have not had experience with using Slurm, or, for experienced users transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler.
