Understand and effectively manage employee issues in a unionized environment.

Labour Relations in the Workplace provides a foundational overview of labour relations in both a unionized environment. Participants will learn about the collective bargaining process and how to construct and interpret collective agreements. The grievance and arbitration process will also be explored. Participants will also explore the steps involved in the progressive disciplinary process with an opportunity to practice implementing it. Participants will learn to identify constructive dismissals and how to avoid them.

Key Learning Outcomes

• Differentiate and define employee relations and labor relations.
• Understand the collective bargaining process and role of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Know how to manage grievances and the arbitration process and understand the difference between them.
• Understand and practice using the progressive disciplinary process.
• Identify what constructive dismissal is and how to avoid it.

The world did not truly believe in giant squid until the 1870s, a charmed decade that brought record numbers of the mysterious creatures to the waters and beaches around the island of Newfoundland. Photographs that appeared in international newspapers and physical specimens sent to Ivy League laboratories accomplished what eye-witness accounts had been attempting for centuries: to prove beyond doubt that giant squid are real.

Thrilling tales and images of the Newfoundland “devilfish” spread around the globe and helped to shape the animal’s public image as a delightfully terrifying enigma suspended at the boundary of fable and fact.

In an illustrated talk, Jenny Higgins will take us through that history. She will also touch upon the sea monsters associated with the giant squid, including the kraken, sea serpent, and a giant lobster named Polypus.

Jenny Higgins is the author of Devilfish: When Giant Squid Ruled the Northern Sea. Her book will be available for purchase at this event, and she will be available for book signing.

Join Nature NL for our Monthly Public Talk: Stories Trees Tell Us.

Trees are long-lived, sessile organisms; not the group one might immediately think of to study the impacts of climate change. Yet, trees record a history of the conditions they have experienced. Their wood can tell us the story of that history, helping us to understand the environment through the tree’s lifespan, disturbances it may have experienced, or the history of an object made of that wood. Trees can also tell us stories by where they do and do not grow. Those stories help us predict where they may (or may not) occur in the future under ongoing global change. Using examples from 1) alpine treeline, 2) fire ecology, and 3) a dendroarchaeology involving a mysterious shipwreck, we will explore how we can turn to trees to understand the past, present, and future of places and things.

About the speaker:
Dr. Brown is interested in the drivers and controls of the spatial distribution of plant species, particularly trees, under climatic change. As environmental constraints on species’ distributions lessen with warming temperatures in northern ecosystems, we expect species to shift their distributions northward and upward (in alpine environments); however, a species’ establishment and persistence is controlled by many factors beyond climate, and Dr. Brown is particularly interested in phenomena beyond direct climate effects that drive species’ distributions.

Inuit Connections is a concert of contemporary and sacred classical music sung in Inuktitut and English, performed by Inuk soprano Deantha Edmunds. Inuk soprano Deantha Edmunds, recently appointed a member of the Order of Canada, will share original selections from her award-winning Indigenous classical album, ‘Connections.’ She will also sing sacred selections in Inuktitut from her album ‘Pillorikput Inuit: Inuktitut Arias for All Seasons.’ Edmunds hopes this program will give her audience a glimpse into who she is, how she walks through this world and who and what she carries with her.

What is High Performance Computing (HPC) and what can it do for me? How can ACENET help? Used by researchers across many disciplines to tackle analyses too large or complex for a desktop, or to achieve improved efficiency over a desktop, this session takes participants through the preliminary stages of learning about high performance computing (HPC) and computing clusters, and how to get started with this type of computing. It then reviews software packages available for applications, data analysis, software development and compiling code. Most of us have experience using a computer, whether for school, work, or entertainment, but how many of us have actually had an expert teach us how to use it? When one of your computing devices goes wrong, do you struggle to understand why? Perhaps you do an internet search in the hope that someone else who has had the exact same problem as you found a solution that also works for you. It doesn’t need to be (quite) this way. This talk doesn’t teach you how to troubleshoot everything, but does give you insight to how media, programs and data are encoded and used by computers so you can make more sense of why computers behave the ways they do and solve some of your problems with greater efficiency and less frustration. We provide an approachable overview of how a computer works, by both looking at their history and breaking one down to explain individual components, before highlighting some of the tradeoffs to consider when buying a computer. We provide practical, simple, and actionable advice on digital security and show you a few “pro tips” on how to make the most of your workstation, phone, or whatever device you happen to use. Whether you have a lot or a little experience using your digital technology, if you want to learn how to use your devices more effectively, this workshop is for you!

We will dive into the anatomy of a mushroom and how it matters in proper identification, where and why fungus shows up in our garden, what types are beneficial or harmful, and take a walk to observe the specimens we have in the Botanical Garden. Please note this workshop will not focus on foraging or the edibility of wild mushrooms.

This month we’ll be admiring some early autumn views on our cycling excursion to Quidi Vidi Harbour. This is an easy route (mostly downhill) and should take about 20 to 30 minutes. The excursion will take us across Rennie’s River, along Rennie’s Mill Rd. and the north side of Quidi Vidi Lake, and finish at picturesque Quidi Vidi Harbour.

At 1:45 PM, we will start to gather in the parking lot at the Queen’s College building on the main campus (MUN). We’ll leave in small groups starting at 2 PM with experienced riders at the front and back of each group. Groups will be staggered about 5 minutes apart.

Whether you’re a student or a member of the public who likes cycling, everyone is welcome to join us. The excursion is free but we ask that you please email us in advance (munbikehub@gmail.com) so that we have an idea of how many people will be in the group. It helps us plan better and avoid blocking traffic. If you forget to message us in advance, don’t worry. Feel free to join us at Queen’s College or along the route.

If you are interested in joining the excursion and live in the downtown area, let us know. If there is enough interest, we may plan a second starting point downtown, with a route that will meet up with the main groups along the way.

In Microsoft Excel Level 3, participants will build confidence and mastery in their skills. Filled with practical instruction and ample practice, participants will learn to consolidate, validate, and forecast data. They will learn to use data validation tools to maintain data integrity. Participants will learn how to use Look Up and Reference functions with large data sets and how to combine formulas and functions to add automation to workbooks. Participants will leave the course with the ability to use the software to drive greater efficiency, reduce errors and make confident decisions using data-driven insights.

We love welcoming our canine friends to the Garden, but it only happens once a month. Come on in to explore our trails with your pups during these special events!

Dog Days will happen the fourth Sunday afternoon each month through October.

All dogs must remain on leash and under their person’s control at all times. Water bowls, treats, and extra waste bags will be available. Leave no “messes” behind!
