The Directors Education Program (DEP), jointly developed by the Institute of Corporate Directors and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, is offered nationally at Canada’s top business schools including Gardiner Centre, Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University to help board directors clarify their governance mission and fully exercise their leadership potential.

Directors are continually challenged by information gaps, time squeezes, and the behavioural dynamics that can be encountered in the boardroom. The ICD-Rotman DEP has been specifically designed to help experienced directors overcome these challenges by introducing activities and processes that assist them in fulfilling their roles.Delivered by Canada’s leading corporate governance experts, this highly interactive 12-day program incorporates roundtable discussions, real-time case studies, and on-point insights from world-renowned faculty, experts in the field of board behaviours, and executives in residence. Completion of the DEP is the first step towards obtaining the professional ICD.D designation granted by the Institute of Corporate Directors. This is the only professional designation for Canadian directors recognized both nationally and internationally.The four-module program offers experiential learning through breakouts and board simulations tailored to meet the needs of directors from corporate, Crown, co-operative, and large not-for-profit organizations.

Are you involved in a contemplative practice, such as mindfulness or other meditation practice, as a member of the Memorial University community? If so, we would love to connect with you! Drs. Carolyn Walsh (Department of Psychology) and Dan Walker (Department of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering) are hosting a weekly meeting for members of the university community who have, or have an interest in, contemplative practices from any tradition. The purpose is to provide a time and space for the community to come together and practice whatever form of quiet contemplation is right for you.

The hour will be broken into segments.  The first ten minutes will give you a chance to meet people and settle in.  We will begin contemplative practice at about ten past the hour for about thirty minutes.  The last twenty minutes can be used for discussion or just to resume getting to know others in the community.  

If you feel you would like some guidance before joining a session, please email us and come ten or fifteen minutes early.   If you would like more guidance or information before joining, we can arrange something at that time or by email.

Chris Phelan – MA student will speak on Examining the Circular Potential of Atlantic Canada’s Makerspaces. 

 This presentation will focus on research investigating the relationship between ideas proposed by the circular economy and makerspaces located in Atlantic Canada. The following will be addressed: Can makerspaces benefit from incorporating ideas surrounding circularity in their practices and if so desires, how is that relationship facilitated? What kind of barriers might exist that prevent the expansion of circularity in makerspaces and how are they overcome?

Tyler Fountain- PhD candidate will speak on “Shaping Cold-Water Coral Communities in the Labrador Sea and Eastern Canadian Arctic”

Research Proposal

Cold-water corals (CWCs) live within a wide range of environmental conditions. Due to their ecological significance and the ongoing transformation of the world’s oceans it is important to understand what biophysical factors determine their distribution, especially in rapidly changing areas such as the Arctic. My research looks to investigate the factors that contribute to structuring the biogeography of CWCs within the Labrador Sea and Eastern Canadian Arctic, while also attempting to predict their distributions under present and future scenarios. This work has the capacity to help inform conservation decision making and promote climate resilient marine spatial planning strategies within this region.
