Join the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place for Dr. Ruth Herbert’s Music and Culture lecture, “Cross-Genre Musicking in Individual and Collaborative Group Contexts: Lived Experience and Musical Identity.”

Abstract: What is it like for a performer to encounter and engage with an unfamiliar network of influences, whilst simultaneously being located within their own habitus of music performance? How does cultural background and training shape an individual’s sense of musical identity? This talk explores the lived experiences of specialist musicians working inside and outside their primary musical tradition and in cross-cultural scenarios where musical traditions intersect. Case studies centre on experiences of improvising musicians from western Classical, north Indian classical, and jazz backgrounds, as well as a cross-genre collaboration between Arabic music specialists, classical string players, and a jazz quintet. Phenomenological characteristics of experiences are considered in relation to an ecological framework and shifts of consciousness.

This event is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a short reception.

This session explores how to effectively assess student learning using the Brightspace Quiz tool while promoting academic integrity. Participants will learn how to create, administer, and grade quizzes, including setting due dates, availability dates, restrictions, and appropriate security options, as well as providing special access for select students.

The session will also highlight strategies for creating multiple versions of a quiz so each student receives a slightly different experience. Topics include shuffling questions and answer choices, using question pools and sections, and organizing content with the Question Library.

Historians have often assumed the mid to late-1970s was a period of dramatic transformation for the regulatory regime governing occupational health and safety in Ontario. Tracing a line from the wildcat strike of uranium miners in 1974, to the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (the “Ham” Commission report of 1976), historians have assumed that the Ontario government’s response – the Occupational Health and Safety Act passed in 1979 – marked the clear rejection of a top-down, employer-driven approach to OH&S. They most commonly cite as evidence the groundbreaking provision in the legislation they entrenched the right of individual workers to refuse unsafe work. Such narratives ignore the fact that industry only adopted the new legislation in a reluctant and haphazard way, contesting the right to refuse unsafe work in some cases, and relying on longstanding tropes about the carelessness and irresponsibility of individual workers as an explanation for mining accidents. In 1980, twenty-three workers died in Ontario’s mines, a heavy toll that prompted a second, often-ignored inquiry: the Joint Federal-Provincial Inquiry Commission into Safety in Mines and Mining Plants in Ontario. Using commission briefs, transcripts, and the final report as key sources, this paper argues that the “Ham” revolution in OH&S has been overstated, and that well into the 1980s the mining industry had not solved the intractable safety and survival challenges that are inherent to working in underground environments. The paper also suggests that the eventual dramatic decline in mining accidents in Ontario was partly a consequence of the rapid decline in mineral prices in the late-1980s, which led to the closure of older, more dangerous underground mines.

The Video Assignment tool, developed by Bongo and available in Brightspace, allows instructors to implement video-based assessments that evaluate students on speeches, presentations, and more. Apart from individual and group presentations, instructors can also create question-and-answer assessments where students need to respond to questions that appear on the screen in real time. An added bonus is that the video assessments can be created and graded directly in Brightspace.

Geography Lessons: John Mannion, Rosemary Ommer, and Publicly Engaged History in Newfoundland

This presentation will highlight the contributions of Geography to the development of a publicly engaged history in Newfoundland. First, it will consider the pioneering role of John Mannion in understanding the dynamics of settlement and community through oral history and student engagement in community research. Second, it will examine how Mannion’s work on Irish cultural transfer and adaptation influenced the work of Rosemary Ommer, informing her ideas about outport resilience. Later influenced by her work with David Alexander and the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project, Ommer pioneered the interdisciplinary study of rural neglect and concomitant ecological degradation that led to the cod moratorium of 1992. Her experience in such research made Ommer a determined advocate for a public scholarship in dialogue with communities and governments in a quest for social and environmental justice.

Bio: Sean Cadigan is a professor of history at Memorial University. His research and teaching interests include the social history of Newfoundland and Labrador, the relationship between war and political culture, and the political economy and history of the offshore oil industry, seafaring, logging, and fishing in Atlantic Canada.
