Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race Day

Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

White Hills Ski Resort, Clarenville

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the oldest and largest engineering student design competition in Canada. Each year, it brings together 400+ students and industry professionals from 15+ universities across the country for four days of networking, learning, testing, design, competition, school spirit, and so much more. In 2024, the competition will truly become coast to coast as it makes its way to Atlantic Canada for the first time in the event’s 50-year history with a team of MUN Engineering alumni winning the bid to host the national competition in St. John’s this coming February.

So, what exactly is a concrete toboggan?

A concrete toboggan is a student-designed structure with a running surface made entirely of concrete, fully functioning steering and braking systems and a safety roll cage. All assembled, it will carry five team members down a ski hill to compete in a drag race, giant slalom course and a king of the hill tournament.

As this is the first time many of the competitors will have visited St. John’s, and Newfoundland and Labrador in general, it is the goal of the organizing committee to proudly represent the culture and beauty of our province to the students and professionals that will be in attendance.

We are looking to share the news of the competition with MUN students to encourage them to view the races and create interest in MUN’s GNCTR team for future competitions.
