Tuckamore Festival Launch Concert
Friday, May 8, 7-9 p.m.
St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, St. John's
The Tuckamore Festival is proud to announce its upcoming season launch concert, featuring acclaimed Canadian ensemble Duo Concertante. The free performance will take place on Friday, May 8th at 7:00 PM, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, “The Kirk.”
The program showcases a rich and expressive selection of works, including Four Romantic Pieces, Op. 75 by Antonín Dvořák, Iridescence (2023) by Luis Ramirez, and the Sonata in A major for violin and piano, Op. 100 by Johannes Brahms. The concert also highlights Canadian repertoire with Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary’s by Otto Kelland (arranged by Duncan Strachen), alongside From My Homeland by Bedřich Smetana.
For nearly three decades, Duo Concertante—violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves—have built an extraordinary musical legacy as performers, mentors, and champions of new music. Praised for their “deeply integrated performances that flow naturally as if the music were being created on the spot” (Gramophone), the duo has performed more than 750 concerts across North America, Europe, Central America, and China. Their performances have been described as filled with “grace and fire… fury and repose… a triumphant mass of non-stop energy” (WholeNote).
Duo Concertante has commissioned over 70 works from leading Canadian composers and regularly presents new music alongside core repertoire in major venues including Wigmore Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, Koerner Hall, Spandau Citadel in Berlin, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. Their discography includes 15 award-winning recordings, among them the recent Maier/Franck/Schumann (Delphian), praised as “a powerful, heart on your sleeve performance” (The Strad) and “sublime” (Yorkshire Times).
Since its founding in 2001, the Tuckamore Festival has mentored more than 500 young musicians and welcomed 180 internationally renowned guest artists to Newfoundland and Labrador. In its 25th anniversary year, the festival presented over 55 concerts and events, along with 14 school presentations reaching communities across the province—from Hopedale to Labrador City, and from Corner Brook to Pouch Cove.
