Award-Winning Short Documentary Screening: “The Muse”

Thursday, June 25, 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Emera Innovation Exchange, Signal Hill Campus

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television named Director Wanda Nolan’s ‘The Muse’ Best Short Documentary in the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards. The title, ‘The Muse’, which is of course also the title of Memorial’s student-run publication, is not the only thing it shares with Memorial University.

In addition to being a photographer, Ting Ting Chen is a graduate student in Memorial University’s Folklore program and a resident of Signal Hill Campus. ‘The Muse’ tells the story of the beautiful, inspiring, age-defying friendship between Ting Ting and Robert Tilley, who was born in 1948. Robert became the muse for Ting Ting’s extraordinary body of work, which has been exhibited both across Canada and internationally. Select pieces are on exhibit at Emma Butler Gallery.

Robert was a frequent visitor to Signal Hill Campus, and one of Ting Ting’s works featuring Robert is on display at the Conference and Event Services office. Robert passed away in December, 2025. Part of his legacy will be this film, which explores the concepts of intergenerational friendship, aging, memory and identity while demonstrating the power of creative connection.
Ting Ting will be at the screening and available for a short q&a session following.
All welcome to attend.
