ATENA DAEMI: HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND FORMER POLITICAL PRISONER IN IRAN

Please join us for an engaging talk by Atena Daemi (Human Rights Activist and Former Political Prisoner in Iran):

Atena Daemi, after spending years in an Iranian prison for her activism, will share some of her personal experiences fighting for human rights.

What is happening in Iran right now and why? How did Iran (and the world) get to this current moment? Atena will also discuss the geopolitical history of Iran that has led to today while highlighting the role of women’s rights.

It is a privilege to welcome Atena to the Geography Blue Box, and we remind all guests that the Blue Box is a space of respect and learning.

About Atena:

Atena Daemi is an Iranian human rights activist and former political prisoner. She spent nearly seven years in prison in Iran (six years and seven months) because of her peaceful activism, including her opposition to the death penalty and her work in defense of women’s and human rights. During those years, she lived with many women prisoners, both political and non-political, and witnessed the impact of injustice and discrimination on their lives.

She has been active in human rights work for more than 12 years. Today, she continues to speak about human rights and violations in Iran, with a strong focus on the death penalty and the rights of women and prisoners. Together with other activists, she is also working to help build a progressive political group grounded in human rights and social justice. She hopes to continue her education and has recently applied in Sociology at Memorial University
