CITL Instructor Series: Making Room for Transferable Skills in Academic Courses
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2-3 p.m.
Hybrid:Online or In-person Room ED-1001, G.A. Hickman Building, Memorial University
Presenters: Dr. Suzanne Dufour Professor, Dept of Biology, Faculty of Science & Ian Gibson, FUSION Coordinator, CITL
During the course of their academic degrees, students will acquire and develop a handful of different skills which are almost never taught to them explicitly—the ability to collaborate, for instance, or the ability to adapt quickly to unfamiliar circumstances. So often we educators take these skills for granted, and when we do think of them, we presume that they are ancillary to the “actual” content of our courses. In this presentation, we will consider what it might look like to give these skills their due, as well as how we might make room for students to develop and reflect upon them in our classes. This will involve looking at a particular implementation of a FUSION skill-development module in an academic class.
