There are five conditions that promote student success: institutional commitment, institutional expectations, support, feedback, and involvement or engagement (Tinto & Pusser, 2006). Engagement is invariably cited within all scholarly discussions and debates regarding student success and can be fostered from the first day when reviewing the course outline to the final day when revising the capstone project. While the last few years in post-secondary education have certainly challenged our conception and implementation of engagement, it has also provided innovative frameworks for redeveloping our connections with students. One such reflective framework includes rethinking engagement and persistence through student social networks, “using the classroom and curriculum as contexts for understanding how different forms of networks: tight or loose, dense or sparse can engender different outcomes for students” (Tinto, 2023). During this session, we will participate in a thoughtful and meaningful conversation on student social networks and their role within the introductions and communications embedded in our course outlines, connections to services and supports on campus, and perceptions of teaching and learning activities.
