Coast Lines: Michael Crummey and Perry Chafe

Join us for Coast Lines and Coffee on July 28, featuring Perry Chafe (BA’92), television showrunner, writer, producer, songwriter and author of Closer by Sea and Michael Crummey (BA’87), award-winning novelist and poet and author of The Adversary, in conversation with Angela Antle (BA’91). We look forward to welcoming you to our latest event celebrating the Newfoundland and Labrador literary landscape.

The Memorial University Bookstore will be onsite with various Coast Lines titles for sale and our guests of honour will be happy to sign copies of their books following the panel discussion.

PERRY CHAFE (BA ’92) was the co-creator and co-showrunner for the CBC TV series Republic of Doyle, which ran for six seasons. He was also  executive producer and writer for the Netflix/Discovery series Frontier and the executive producer and writer for Caught, based on Lisa Moore’s award-winning novel. Perry is currently a writer and producer on the hit CBC series Son of a Critch and has also co-written a number of songs with partner Maureen Ennis of the JUNO award-winning music group The Ennis Sisters.
Perry released his debut novel Closer by Sea in 2023 which became a national bestseller. He was born in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.

MICHAEL CRUMMEY (BA’87) is the author of seven books of poetry and the short fiction collection Flesh and Blood. His first novel, River Thieves, was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and his second novel, The Wreckage, was a finalist for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. His third novel, Galore, won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Canada and the Caribbean) and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award. His fourth novel, Sweetland, was also a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award; a feature film based on the novel is currently in theatres nationwide. The Innocents (2020), was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award. His most recent novel is The Adversary (2023) was called “a beautifully written, immensely powerful and subtly ingenious novel” by The Washington Post. Michael Crummey lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Ticket Price: $25 CAD (in person) + 15% HST + 4.5% processing fee. Ticket price includes coffee/tea, continental breakfast, panel discussion, book signing, and parking. Event will be livestreamed.
