Presentation title: Taxation & regular folks’ migration: evidence from 35 years of Canadian data
Overview: Using administrative data on all immigrant arrivals to Canada and individual tax returns, we investigate how personal taxation affects inter-provincial migration decisions. Using policy variation in average tax rates, we find that higher provincial tax rates cause both immigrants and individuals born in Canada to move out of the province. We also explore how personal taxation affects migration decisions differently for immigrants with different characteristics, including visa category, education attainment and intended occupation.
This talk is open to the public.
