International Inuit Day: Lighting of the Kullik

Thursday, Nov. 7, 10-11 a.m.

Queen Elizabeth II Library Lobby

Thursday, November 7th, is International Inuit Day, a day to celebrate the language and culture of Inuit in Canada and Internationally. The Office of Indigenous Affairs and the Indigenous Student Resource Centre would like to invite the Memorial community to join us in celebrating this day.

At 10 am in the lobby of the QEII library we will be lighting the Kullik, and sharing a brief education session about the Kullik and the origins of International Inuit Day. The Kullik, an oil lamp traditionally made of soap stone and fuelled with animal fats, was used in traditional Inuit home life for light, heat, cooking, and more. It is now lit during important events and ceremonies to welcome community.
