International Women’s Day Rally: In Solidarity with the Brave Women of Iran

Wednesday, March 8, 12-1 p.m.

CSF-1302

We are a group of Iranian scholars (faculty, students, alumni, and staff) from universities all around the world, representing 300+ institutions in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. We are reaching out to you to ask to cover the “March 8th Campus Rally for Iran” happening at the campus of Memorial University on March 8th .

March 8th is a day of significance for women, as it is a day to celebrate their ongoing struggle for freedom, equality. It is also a day to remember the Iranian revolution, which began after Mahsa (Jina) Amini murder in 2022. This revolution (with the slogan of Woman, Life, Freedom) is the first women-led revolution in history. Iranian women have been at the forefront of this revolution, fighting against gender apartheid, forced confessions, no due process, unfair trials, extrajudicial killings, no free expression, torture, child marriage, government corruption, funding of terrorism, and theocracy.

The “March 8th Campus Rally for Iran” is an international rally taking place on the same day in 100+ universities around the globe to stand in solidarity with brave Iranian women who are continuing their struggle for their rights and against the oppressive regime in Iran. The Iranian scholars at  Memorial University have joined this rally, and in coordination with the university officials, have obtained the permit to hold the rally in CSF-1302 (Core Science Facility) on the St. John’s campus. During this rally, hundreds of Memorial University scholars will participate to echo the voice of Iranian women who are fighting for their freedom and equality. The rally will end with a declaration of a statement condemning the brutal crackdowns on women’s rights in Iran.

The dictatorship in Iran has silenced and imprisoned any dissident voice inside Iran. Any Iranian reporter and journalist inside Iran who raised their voice against the dictatorship have been arrested and tortured. Therefore, it is our responsibility to amplify the voice of Iranian women and raise awareness about the ongoing struggle in Iran. With the “8th of March Campus Rally for Iran” happening in 100+ universities around the globe, the voice of Iranian women can reach the government officials in the western countries.
