Moth Night with Nature N.L.

Thursday, July 18, 8:30-11 p.m.

306 Mount Scio Rd., St. John's

Join Nature NL for a fun and informative Moth Night on Thursday, July 18, from 8:30-11:00 pm. Drop in between those hours, or stay the whole time.

Get a chance to learn about moths with entomologist Dr. Sean McCann. We will be setting up a “moth sheet” with a mercury vapor lamp which emits a type of light moths are attracted to. Moths coming in will land on the sheet, where they can be photographed and identified. Other insects, such as caddisflies, lacewings, and midges, will also be attracted, and this will allow a glimpse of some of the nighttime biodiversity of St. John’s. Photographs of moths can be submitted to iNaturalist and identified, and will help provide baseline knowledge of local insect diversity and contribute data to our insect monitoring program.

This event is entirely outdoors, so dress accordingly.

This event was generously supported by Memorial University’s Office of Public Engagement in collaboration with Dr. Catherine Scott, The Rooms, and the Botanical Garden

Presented by Memorial University Botanical Garden
