National Indigenous Peoples Day

The Indigenous Student Resource Centre (ISRC) located at Juniper House at 208 Elizabeth Avenue on the St. John’s Campus have partnered with the School of Social Work (SSW), Memorial’s Students Union (MUNSU), the Student Experience Office (SEO) and First Light Friendship Centre to offer an event to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) on June 21st from 12 noon to 1:30pm. This day is a day to celebrate and honour Indigenous Peoples, to spread awareness about Indigenous Peoples in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to encourage the Memorial community to attend First Light Friendship Centre’s celebrations at the Techniplex from 2:00pm onwards on June 21st.

Festivities will begin at noon in Juniper House with an Opening Prayer by an Elder, followed by welcoming words from the ISRC, Office of Indigenous Affairs (OIA) and SSW. A presentation by Assistant Professor, Fred Andersen with the School of Social Work will follow. For community members interested in watching this presentation online you may do so by registering here. Community members may also watch Mr. Andersen’s presentation via YouTube using this link.

Please note, if the Memorial community wishes to partake in First Light’s NIPD celebrations, the ISRC will be providing transportation via Gladney’s Bus at 1:30pm from Parking Lot 15 on the St. John’s campus to the Techniplex in Pleasantville on June 21st. The bus will be returning to campus at 5:00pm that day. Seats are limited so please book your bus seat by emailing isrc@mun.ca. For more information please email isrc@mun.ca.
