Neuroscience Treatments in Stuttering
Saturday, Sept. 6, 1-3:30 p.m.
Online
Dr. Gerald Maguire MD will present “Neuroscience Treatments in Stuttering”:
Research links stuttering to differences in brain function, particularly in areas controlling speech and motor coordination. Neurotransmitter imbalances and genetic factors also contribute, highlighting the need for both medical and therapeutic interventions.
Dr. Maguire is President and Founder of the Stuttering Treatment and Research Society (STARS), established in 2025 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals who stutter by advancing neuroscience research and comprehensive treatment methods. STARS is focused on uncovering the neurological causes of stuttering with the goal of increasing global awareness and understanding of the condition.
A psychiatrist and person who stutters, Dr. Maguire has dedicated his career to developing innovative treatments for stuttering and related neurological conditions. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Member of the American College of Psychiatrists and has published over 75 journal articles and authored multiple books and book chapters on the neuroscience-based treatment of stuttering.
