Our Languages Are In Deep Trouble. How Can We Save Them?
Friday, June 18, 2-4 p.m.
Brian Maracles, Kanien’kéha/Mohawk language advocate and teacher, will present. This presentation focuses on the Mohawk adult immersion program on the Six Nations reserve in Ontario; its history, curriculum, methods, results and impact on the community. It highlights a root-word method which the program uses to achieve advanced levels of language proficiency after two years. The presentation also points to the potential for language activists in other regions to achieve similar results using a root-word method and details the program requirements.
