Python Ocean Data Analytics Bootcamp (Day 1)
Thursday, June 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Fisheries and Marine Institute, 155 Ridge Road, St. John's, NL
Join us for this three-day, hands-on Python Data Analytics Bootcamp focused on applications in oceanography. Designed for researchers, students, and professionals in marine and environmental sciences, this workshop builds strong foundations in Python programming and data analysis using oceanographic datasets. Participants will learn how to collect, prepare, analyze, and visualize data with modern Python tools.
Dates: June 25, 26 & 29, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
Location: Fisheries and Marine Institute, 155 Ridge Road, St. John’s, NL
Rooms: W3005 (June 25–26) and MI Conference Centre (June 29).
Note: This is an in-person workshop at Marine Institute. Participants requiring accessibility accommodations are encouraged to let us know below so that appropriate arrangements can be made. As this is a hands-on workshop, participants are required to bring their own laptop for the duration of the training.
Workshop Description
Over three days, participants will progress from Python fundamentals to data cleaning, preparation, exploration, and visualization techniques using real-world oceanographic datasets. A certificate of achievement will be offered to participants who attend the full workshop and complete the workshop activities.
Day 1: Python Fundamentals and Data Handling
Participants will learn the foundations of Python programming, including variables, data types, lists, tuples, and dictionaries. The day will also introduce control structures such as loops and conditionals, as well as functions and libraries. Through hands-on exercises using oceanographic datasets, participants will gain practical experience writing and organizing Python code for data-related tasks.
Day 2: Data Cleaning, Preparation, and Exploration
This day focuses on working with data using Pandas, one of Python’s most widely used data analysis libraries. Participants will learn how to load, explore, manipulate, and save datasets while performing common analytical tasks. The workshop will also cover essential data preparation techniques, including handling missing values, duplicates, outliers, inconsistent data, and reshaping datasets to make them suitable for analysis.
Day 3: Advanced Data Analysis and Hands-On Practice
Participants will learn how to create effective visualizations using Python and explore methods for analyzing and displaying oceanographic data. Topics include creating charts, identifying trends and patterns, and visualizing data on maps. The day concludes with a guided hands-on project where participants apply the skills learned throughout the workshop to clean, analyze, and visualize a real-world oceanographic dataset.
ACENET is a consortium of post-secondary institutions in Atlantic Canada that provides digital research infrastructure access, expertise and support, and skills development. We help researchers to use powerful computers with fast networks, petabytes of storage, and specialized software and methods for data mining, big data processing and analysis, visual analytics, large simulations, machine learning, cloud-based platforms and research portals, and complex modelling and calculations that regular computers simply can’t handle. We also offer research data management tools, and our local team provides specialized expertise in a variety of areas, ongoing support and skills development to researchers and their teams.
