Science on the Rock: Deep-Sea Mining of Hydrothermal Vents

Tuesday, May 28, 7-8 p.m.

Quidi Vidi brewery

Join us for a deep dive to the bottom of the sea with Dr. John Jamieson: “Hydrothermal vents are hot springs that occur near underwater volcanoes in the deep ocean. They contain rich concentrations of metals like copper and gold and are targets for potential future mining. However, they also host unique ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth. In this talk, I will discuss how and where deep sea mineral deposits form, how we explore for these deposits, and the complicated question of whether we should mine the seafloor for metals that will be required for the shift to a green economy.”

Presented by Science on the Rock, MUN faculty of science
