SQL for Humanities, Social Sciences and Librarians

This two-part session is the second of our Humanities & Social Sciences Data Organization & Analysis Series.

Beginner, 6 hours (November 15, 1-4pm Atlantic time & November 22, 1:30-4:30pm Atlantic time)

Prerequisites: None

Requirements: laptop or desktop computer with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages.

Many web applications, research project websites, and library & archival repositories store data in relational databases. A relational database can help you keep your data separate from your analysis, improve quality control of data entry, reduce duplication of data, and improve your ability to search across large and complex datasets. Structured Query Language, or SQL, is a powerful language used to search and manipulate relational databases.

This workshop teaches researchers, librarians, and information professionals about relational databases and SQL using SQLite. You will learn how to write queries in SQL and how to use aggregate functions to combine data. This domain-specific workshop uses examples and challenges from Humanities, Social Sciences, and library research fields and uses Library Carpentry materials.

This session will be delivered online. This workshop will be offered in collaboration with an instructor from Calcul Québec. It is a two-part six-hour session with the introductory materials covered on November 15, and the more advanced SQL content covered on November 22. Attendees register for both parts.
