The Body is Not an Object: A Public Lecture in Philosophy from Dr. Shannon Hoff

Tuesday, Oct. 27, 7-8 p.m.

Peter Easton Pub, 28 Cookstown Rd., St. John's

Join the Department of Philosophy for the first St. John’s Public Lecture in Philosophy for the 2026-27 year.

Abstract:

The body is material that experiences. The body becomes itself by joining with what it is not, with the world. What is this strange phenomenon and what kind of world and attitudes does it need? Hoff will try to figure these things out, exploring the significant political consequences of the fact that the body is not (really) an object.
