The Unquiet Heart
Saturday, Jan. 10, 8-8:30 p.m.
D.F. Cook Recital Hall
Dive into the depths of emotion with The Unquiet Heart, an evocative evening of music presented by the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra on January 10, 2026, at 8pm at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall, MUN—conducted by Simon Rivard and presented by Quidi Vidi Brewery as part of the Sinfonia series.
This intimate, thought-provoking program begins with Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor, “Abschieds-Symphonie; Farewell Symphony”—a poignant work that bids farewell with each movement as musicians leave the stage, symbolizing the departing court musicians. Tension simmers and pathos soars in this dramatic Classical gem.
The heart’s turbulence continues with a new work by composer Mao Zhu, featuring special guest Jing Xia on guzheng, blending Eastern tradition with contemporary textures in a poignant, modern voice.
Finally, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, Op. 73a delivers raw emotion and aching intensity, reimagining his powerful Tenth String Quartet for string orchestra.
The Unquiet Heart explores passion, pain, and the spaces between—an unforgettable concert for those who love their music with soul. Tickets are available at the ACC Box Office (709-729-3900), online at www.artsandculturecentre.com and at the door.
