Music at Memorial professor Christine Carter (clarinet) joins forces with acclaimed Canadian musicians Pierre-Alain Bouvrette (cello), and Martin Karlíček (piano) for this trio program spanning the centuries. Canadian composer Patrick Cardy’s Tombeau begins the program with elegiac restraint and an atmosphere of reverence. From this quiet intensity, the mood shifts to Libby Larsen’s dramatic Trio Noir, conceived as a film-noir score that evokes a world of nocturnal mystery. The first half concludes with Robert Muczynski’s Fantasy Trio, whose rhythmic bite and bold gestures propel the music forward with energy and clarity. The program culminates in the lush harmonic language and lyricism of Alexander von Zemlinsky’s Trio, a crowning conclusion that reveals the late-Romantic richness linking Zemlinksy – Arnold Schoenberg’s only teacher – to an earlier tradition.
