Teaching and Learning

By Jennifer Batten

Enrolment figures are in for the fall 2016 semester at Memorial University.

There are 18,272 students taking courses across the university’s campuses; a slight decline over the previous year’s total of 18,413.

Graduate studies increase

Overall graduate enrolment has increased by 1.9 per cent, continuing the steady growth trajectory in graduate studies at Memorial that began more than nine years ago. Overall undergraduate enrolment has declined marginally as anticipated, with a decrease of 1.7 per cent for a total of 13,663 students enrolled across campuses.

Marine Institute’s overall enrolment sits at 1,122 students, which is an increase of 4.4 per cent over the previous year. Grenfell Campus enrolment has decreased by 2.2 per cent over last year, with a total of 1,043 students studying in Corner Brook this fall.

“The sustained rise in demand in graduate studies at Memorial directly reflects the quality and inimitability of our standout programs.” –Dr. Noreen Golfman

“The sustained rise in demand in graduate studies at Memorial directly reflects the quality and inimitability of our standout programs,” said Dr. Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic). “While we expect this graduate growth to continue, we are mindful of stagnant growth in undergraduate enrolments and we are taking steps to address the challenges, including declining demographics and increased global competition in higher education.

“We are mapping the recruitment and admission process with a view to closing gaps, improving turnaround times and ensuring more nimble responses to students,” added Dr. Golfman. “Work continues in this area with stakeholders from the Centre for Institutional Analysis and Planning, the Office of Student Recruitment, the Registrar’s Office, the Deputy Provost and Student Life.”

Stable enrolment

In 2014 Memorial projected that undergraduate enrolment would remain stable over the next few years and graduate enrolment would continue to rise. It is anticipated that demand for graduate programs at Memorial will continue to increase, and this growth will be supported by Memorial’s Enrolment Plan 2020, the Strategic Internationalization Plan 2020, the Strategic Research Intensity Plan 2020 and the university’s three frameworks.

The enrolment data included above was generated on Sept. 21, the last date to add undergraduate courses. There are currently more than 100 graduate and undergraduate degree options at Memorial. Information about all programs can be found here.
