Student appointments to the Board of Regents

Campus and Community

By

The province has appointed three student members to the Board of Regents. Gerry Byrne, minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, announced the appointments Aug. 19.

Appointed to Memorial University Board of Regents are Zachery Green of Williams Way, Rebecca Stuckley of St. John’s, and Jaime Giraldo of Columbia.

“I congratulate members on their appointments to the Board of Regents … where they will provide dedicated insight as student representatives,” said Minister Byrne. “The provincial government will continue to work in partnership with Memorial University to ensure the best possible post-secondary experience for the province’s students and ensure they are able to acquire the greatest benefit from our economic opportunities.”

Students are nominated by students themselves and not subject to the Independent Appointments Commission and the merit-based appointment process created by the provincial government in spring 2016, said a news release from the province.

Jaime Giraldo is enrolled in the bachelor of fine arts (visual arts) degree program at Grenfell Campus, Zachery Green is enrolled in the bachelor of technology degree program at the Marine Institute and is president of the Marine Institute’s Student Union, and Rebecca Stuckley is a graduate student at Memorial University.

Nominees for appointment as student representatives are recommended to the boards by the respective student unions.

The Independent Appointments Commission is actively recruiting for non-student positions on the Board of Regents.
