The impact of Memorial’s research is being felt throughout our province and around the world like never before.
That theme underscores the university’s latest research report, which is now online.
Research Report 2014-16 captures the university’s diverse research activities over the last two years during which – under the leadership of Dr. Richard Marceau – Memorial focused on intensifying its strategic research efforts.
Dr. Marceau joined Memorial in 2013. He passed away in September 2016.
The report’s time frame also covers the creation and launch of Memorial’s Strategic Research Intensity Plan (SRIP), which was approved in 2014. SRIP is a road map that builds on the university’s institutional Research Strategy Framework supporting Memorial’s vision “ . . . to be one of the most distinguished public universities in Canada and beyond . . . ” by 2020.
As noted in Dr. Marceau’s welcome message, Memorial’s funding from Tri-Agency competitions has increased since the launch of SRIP; graduate programming has expanded; and investments for critical infrastructure have grown. Additionally, there are now more specialized researchers conducting more specialized research.
“And, the best is yet to come!” Dr. Marceau wrote.
Multidisciplinary focus
The report features researchers from Grenfell Campus; the Marine Institute; the Labrador Institute; the faculties of Business Administration, Education, Engineering and Applied Science, Humanities and Social Sciences; Medicine; and Science; and the schools of Human Kinetics and Recreation, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work.
Platform provides greater reach
With the launch of the Gazette news site in January of this year, enhanced online communications became possible. Harnessing the power of the site, each of the report’s main stories were shared on the Gazette every two weeks from March to September.

Profiles were also shared on social media and videos featuring researchers were uploaded to Memorial’s YouTube channel. The co-ordinated approach provided greater exposure for each researcher, their teams and research projects.
Vital statistics
The new research report also includes financial information, other related research stories and links to previous reports.
Dr. Ray Gosine, vice-president (research) pro tempore, says the report provides a comprehensive snapshot of Memorial’s research success over the past two years.
“Through the ongoing efforts of the Strategic Research Intensity Plan and consistent with the direction set by the Research Strategy Framework, Memorial is strengthening and enhancing its research activities across our disciplines,” he said.
“This report highlights much of that work, profiling the incredibly talented researchers, inventors, artists and critical thinkers whose work is having an impact provincially, nationally and internationally.”
