Winter isn’t over despite my efforts to wish it away!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a big fan of the snow and the cold, but I believe in making the most of the winter season—since I have to endure it one way or another.

So, how does one make the most of snowy days? I have a few ideas.

Get outside

There are plenty of winter activities to partake in outside, especially on days with fresh snow. It’s hard in the city to snowmobile or snowboard, but there are other ways to get out and enjoy yourself.

I love snowshoeing. It’s my favourite winter outdoor activity. There are plenty of trails around town to snowshoe on, and it’s a nice leisurely way to enjoy some fresh snow. Another fun outdoor activity is cross country skiing in Pippy Park. You can rent skis there so it’s hassle-free and fun. Just don’t forget your appropriate attire!

Another thing I like to do when there’s a fresh blanket of snow down is visit some of the local beaches.

“Finding joy in winter is the best way to get through the worst of the weather while we eagerly await warmer days.”

For me, there is something really magical about beaches in the winter. Recently, a friend and I took a drive down to the beach in St. Phillips and the ice looked like a scene from a Disney movie! I highly recommend taking a visit to Middle Cove, Topsail Beach, or any of the local beaches; they’re all so pretty in the winter.

Stay inside

If it’s really snowy, staying inside is usually the safest option.

My favourite things to do if I have to stay in are reading good book, baking cookies, watching a movie or having a mini self-care spa day. It feels good to indulge yourself when there are no other options and you get to stay home from school or work.

From childhood, there’s always been something about snow days that makes me feel so carefree. Don’t forget the storm chips and to take a snow day nap!

Despite the weather outside being frightful at times, there are plenty of ways to make the most of snowy days. Finding joy in winter is the best way to get through the worst of the weather while we eagerly await warmer days. Embrace the snow and the cold and you’ll find a pleasure in winter you never thought was possible. We’re lucky that this province is so beautiful that it’s not too hard to learn to love the colder months.
