Case studies

Canadian teaching and learning tools for higher education

Research | Books at Memorial

The higher education environment is a unique ecosystem.

In response to a limited selection of Canadian-based academic resources within the sector, a number of Canadian scholars or practitioners authored or co-authored Leadership and Administration in Canadian Higher Education: Case Studies.

The book is a collection of 11 case studies, each based on lived experience; topics include institutional viability; equity, diversity and inclusion; human resources; crisis management; organizational culture; and policy.

Dr. Angie Clarke, associate vice-president of academic and student affairs at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University; and Dr. Tamara Leary, associate vice-president, integrated academic planning and strategic initiatives, Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C., are co-editors.

Memorial University’s Dr. Christine Arnold, associate professor, Faculty of Education; and Jennifer Browne, director, Student Life, and adjunct professor, Faculty of Education; each contributed case studies.

Encourage reflection and discussion

The scenarios presented are designed to engage users in critical reflection and discussion about leadership and administrative practices in higher education and include teaching notes, suggested readings and key discussion questions.

The collection supports the professional development of academic leaders across the country, as well as being a classroom resource for education students.

With a combined 45 years of experience in post-secondary education as faculty, practitioners and senior administrators, Drs. Leary and Clarke saw a need for a Canadian-based educational resource for both academic and professional development.

Leadership and Administration in Canadian Higher Education: Case Studies provides these teaching and learning tools.

Leadership and Administration in Canadian Higher Education: Case Studies is an open education resource under Creative Commons Licensing. It is available online through Campus eBookstore.
