Getting to know the cast of The New Class

Student Life

By Laura Barron

The New Class is a web series which follows a group of new students as they experience Memorial University’s St. John’s campus throughout the 2016-17 academic year.

The series offers an insider’s view into the opportunities and challenges new students face during their first year on campus, and features 10 students from across the province and around the world.

Chris Jerome is 24 years old, and comes to St. John’s, N.L., from Bangalore, India. She is in her first year of graduate studies at Memorial, pursuing a master’s of business administration degree. She lives with a local family near the St. John’s campus, renting space in their home.

The Gazette caught up with Chris to get to know her a little better.

What are you enjoying most about university life?

I am enjoying my course structure along with the multiple extracurricular activities available on and off campus.

What do you find most challenging about university life?

Time management is the biggest challenge for me — trying to do all the things I want to do is far easier planned than executed.

How is life in St. John’s different from what you’re used to?

St. John’s is much smaller than Bangalore. I love the sense of familiarity and oneness that comes with living in a smaller city. It’s beautiful, fairly unadulterated by skyscrapers and man-made marvels.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy hiking, volunteering and exploring the eateries around town.

What are you hoping to accomplish at Memorial?

I want to walk out of Memorial with the skills and competence to work in a global consulting company.
