Research

By Jeff Green

Dr. Ray Gosine has been named vice-president (research) pro tempore.

The Board of Regents approved his appointment effective Sept. 27. The appointment is in effect until Dec. 31, 2017, or when a new vice-president (research) is appointed.

He moves to the role after the sudden passing of Dr. Richard Marceau last month.

Dr. Gosine most recently served as associate vice-president (research). Earlier this year, he was re-appointed to that role for a five-year term.

Since 2008 Dr. Gosine has also served as vice-president (research) pro tempore for a number of extended periods.

In his time with the vice-president (research) portfolio, Dr. Gosine has been instrumental in leading and supporting a number of key pan-university strategic research initiatives, including the:

  • Development of the Research Strategy Framework;
  • Development of the Strategic Research Intensity Plan;
  • Integration of Genesis Research within the VPR portfolio;
  • Creation of the Strategic Internationalization Plan;
  • Ongoing facilitation of major partnerships with funders and stakeholders;
  • Chair of an independent panel conducting a public review of the implications of hydraulic fracturing operations in Western Newfoundland; and
  • Creation of the new Technology Transfer and Commercialization Strategy and a dedicated Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office.

A Memorial alumnus, Dr. Gosine is also professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the J.I. Clark Chair of Intelligent Systems for Operations in Harsh Environments.
