The proposal for a faculty of law at Memorial is being further refined since receiving Senate endorsement in mid-November.
Focus is now on program and curriculum development, operations, enrolment, tuition and complement planning. Capital costs for space and infrastructure are being considered separately from the operating budget for the faculty of law, and will be excluded from calculation in determining the tuition fee.
“We are moving forward with enhancements to the proposal that was supported by Senate in November,” said Dr. Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic).
“We have received considerable useful feedback and comments from members of the law community, as well as the greater university community, which are helping us move further through the process of considering what a faculty of law would like for Memorial.”
The proposal makes clear that the establishment and ongoing funding of the new program would be cost neutral — that is, the costs for the faculty would have no impact on spending in other areas of the university.
“Our focus at this point is to ensure we develop the best possible law program for the people of N.L. and for those from outside the province who may wish to study at Memorial.”
“We are working on a viable budget and tuition model, with a goal of about $18,000 annual tuition in mind; we are also completing an environmental scan and exploring fundraising options for infrastructure requirements, working with the alumni community and staff in our Office of Development, as well as members of the legal community,” said Dr. Golfman.
“Our focus at this point is to ensure we develop the best possible law program for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and for those from outside the province who may wish to study at Memorial.”
The proposal currently being further developed builds on previous proposals for a faculty of law, including the law feasibility study that was completed in 2013 by a task force of faculty, staff, external stakeholders and administrators at Memorial.
